3-STEP SPARRING

(Sambo Matsogi)

3-Step Sparring is the fundamental base of all sparring.  It is designed to teach the beginner levels of Taekwon-Do how to attack and defend with a lower risk of injury and obtain a better idea of angles and distances for attacking and defending.

SEE BELOW FOR THE 3-STEP SPARRING PART OF

BLACKBURN TAEKWON-DO's TRAINING CURRICULUM.

The rules of 3-Step Sparring is as follows:

PART A - THE MEASURE

1) The attacker always measures with the stance that they will be

    performing throughout the exercise.

2) The attacker should move his/her right foot to the outside of the

opponent's left foot with the following differences:

     i)  If a middle attack will be performed, then the toes of the

attacker should line up with the middle of the opponent's foot.

ii)  If a high or low attack will be performed, then the heel of the

attacker should line up next to the heel of the defender.

3) The defender should form an attention stance while the attacker

is in the process of measuring.

PART B - PERFORMING 3-STEP SPARRING

1) The attacker's ready position is to move the right leg to the rear

to form a Left Walking Stance with a left Outer Fore-arm Block.

The attacker should ki-up at the moment of blocking to symbolize

    his/her readiness to attack.

2) The defender's ready posture is a Parallel Ready Stance.  The

Defender should ki-up after the attacker when ready to defend.

This ki-up provides the attacker with the permission to proceed

    with the exercise.

3) After 3-Steps, the defender should be ready to perform his/her

counter attack.  At the moment of striking, the defender should

ki-up to symobize the end of the exercise as well as gather the

necessary power to demonstrate that this movement would also

    finish the opponent.

4) To return to the ready posture, the attacker should bring the

front leg back and the defender returns the back leg forward,

both to perform Parallel Ready Stance.
